M.F.K. Fisher and Wine

Have a favorite M.F.K. Fisher piece related to wine or wine drinking? Email me! I'd love to know.

I am doing some research on M.F.K. Fisher and wine this morning. It's admittedly early to be thinking about the gentle bubbles of champagne or the inky deep red of a Bordeaux. I'm more in the mood for dark, strong coffee with a shot of hot milk, perhaps with a side of toast and jam?

But, I couldn't help but share some lines I found in an old edition of House Beautiful. M.F.K. Fisher wrote for H&B quite a bit, and when they originally introduced her to their readers, here's what they had to say:

"She's a unique combination of writer and food connoisseur, who has mastered the mysteries of the cook stove and can translate that knowledge into provocative words to inspire novice and gourmet alike. She's a food philosopher who believes that good living and good eating are synonymous, and that good eating isn't dictated by one's purse but by the zest one brings to the planning of everyday meals. In her language there's a food poem in bread, wine and cheese, when you know which bread, wine and cheese to put together."

Good, right? I was in Seattle visiting friends this weekend and couldn't help but be reminded of how good eating and good living (and laughter and dancing) go hand in hand. The photo above was taken while we were waiting expectantly for homemade pizza to come out of the oven. My friend Whitney is the Executive Director of the International Pinot Noir Celebration (IPNC), a wine event you must know about. The bottle is from Desert Wind Winery, owned by my friend Amber Fries and her husband.
